I started out liking it but at 50% I stopped reading when the Alph (Kaden) said "instead of shaking and slapping her, which he was tempted, he pulled her in for a hug." I couldn't go on. Because by now it was like the story was being rushed and the dialogue between them was not very believable. Another thing is when he got mad because the reason she left years ago was because she saw him screwing another woman. I almost stopped there. I think he was too mean and she kept giving in to him. Also, her name was Marala but sometimes the author would use that name or Mara. It would change back and forth either every other sentence or paragraph. Very annoying to me. Others might like this story but I didn't.Mara leaves her pack and has a son by the Alpha. After 17 yrs he finally decides to find her. They argue and he leaves and they make it out like he almost arrives back to his pack and then he's back at her apartment.. She goes back to pack with their son so he can change when it's time.

Reluctantly Lycan Dakota Wolves Book 1 edition by Jez Strider Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
The first time I saw this book I avoided it due to the negative reviews (currently in the minority). This time I chose to see for myself if those reviews had any merit. I read extensively within the paranormal genre and indie authors. The negaive reviews by M.S.S. and others seem based on a lack of understanding of shifter mythos. The bond between mates is very deep and accompanied by genuine love. As in a solid, healthy human pairing, real love and the bond remain even if deep anger and misunderstandings occur. From the first page, the author excelled at showing us the intermingling thoughts, beliefs, and emotions of the human self and wolf self, with the human self taking charge for the most part. The intimacy that occurred was not rape. For them both, their wolf-selves and the underlying love would not be denied the joining, even though there were serious issues not yet resolved. As humans we have our challenges and make plenty of mistakes. The honesty of these characters with themselves and others when they address the times they--as a human or as a wolf--have been out of line set an example for the rest of us, and we don't have a wolf side to deal.with! Though not a full length novel, the author succeeds in creating three dimensional characters, slipping in believable plot twists, and leaves room for the story to expand into future books *without* a cliff-hanger ending. The story arc was smoothly completed, believable and not rushed. There is no gritty violence. The one death that occurs, though deserved, actually occurs when a character acts in self-defense. The editing was very fine, nothing to interrupt the well-paced storyline. I dropped one star only because of my personal preference for keeping intimacy behind closed doors. Sexual innuendo and mildly graphic intimacy between monogamous partners present. This series would be much enjoyed by a broader audience if the graphic elements were deleted and the blatant sexual innuendos replaced with more subtle and genuine sexual emotions. Recommended to adult readers.
I liked the concept of when the wolves change, males after their 18th birthday, females after they are bonded. I don't recall ever reading a similar shift premise, before this book. Other readers complained the alpha, Kaden, never apologized for his part in their (Kaden and Marala's) misunderstanding/separation and acted like an a** for the entire book, and he did for a good portion... I believe the writer was trying to imply Kaden's changes were internal; unfortunately, she didn't really show us these changes, nor tell us. They just sort of "happened" by the end of the book.
Wolves mate for life; I found the concept that Kaden's mate ran away, and out of anger and pride, he didn't look for her for a full two years simply not typical wolfy behavior! Once found, even had he decided to leave her be until she was willing to come back to him, I believe wolf behavior would dictate that Kaden be looking out for and protecting Marala, even if behind the scenes, so to speak. Wolves are not only pack animals, but they are also highly family oriented, and Kaden's behavior was atypical, to put it lightly. When these Lycan's shift, they turn into full wolves - not the distorted half-man-half-beast Hollywood has represented in many movies, nor aberrant, skeletal wolf-type creatures, also represented via Hollywood. As full wolves, their behavior should be represented accurately and with research on this animal, could have been shown correctly. The errors in wolf behavior were quite jarring to me as a reader, even more so than the grammar/spelling errors found within the book, and really distracted from my enjoyment as well as the believability of the book - even fiction, as fantastic as a writer chooses to make it, simply must be believable.
I definitely give Ms. Strider kudos for her creativity, and saw promise in this story, but the wolves not showing typical wolf behavior forced me to give a lower rating than I would have liked. I will consider reading her Vampire stories....
