Charles Lamb wrote this small book in 1808 to tell the tale of Homer's Odyssey to children. It is a wonderfully well-written and accurate account of the story of Ulysses, and modern readers will be surprised at the sentence structure that the early nineteenth century felt was suitable for children. Today it is a good introduction to the verse version for adults as well as children. The year before Lamb wrote this book, he and his sister Mary wrote Tales from Shakespeare in 1807. This is a collection of short-story versions of Shakespeare's plays with some of the dialogue directly from the play. Before World War II, many, many children read Lamb, Bulfinch's Mythology, and Charles Dickens before leaving high school. To read Lamb is a pleasure at any age, and his work provides a marvellously literate transition to the original versions by Homer and Shakespeare. Lamb had a justifiably good reputation as an essayist in the nineteenth century. His essays are genial, humane, and extraordinarily observant. Those who like the prose of his tale of Ulysses owes it to themselves to read more of Charles Lamb. ~ Submitted by Jane Honeycutt

Although written in 1808, this version of Homer's Odyssey is is surprisingly readable. Yes, the language is "King-James-ish", but the story is so interesting and Lamb's powers of description are so good that you are soon pulled in. He skips over some of the duller details of Homer's epic poem and sticks to Ulysses adventures.

I liked Lamb for daring to make moral judgments, calling the greedy sailors "covetous wretches" and the Cyclops a "cannibal." When Ulysses' men eat oxen reserved for the gods, Lamb describes the feast a "rash and sacrilegious banquet." He details Ulysses' descent into hell and of the horrible punishments being suffered there. And he emphasizes Ulysses' choosing to be faithful to his wife in spite of the repeated advances of Calypso.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.

NOT WHAT DESCRIBED - They say - "This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the original. ....... high quality, modern editions that are true to the original work." Nowhere in the description does it say the have removed all the illustrations. So it is NOT a facsimile reprint of the original. Maybe I should have guessed that . . . but as it is, I feel ripped off.
I like how quickly this book downloaded to my computer and am looking forward to reading it and using it in home schooling my 9th grader in Honors English. Thanks!
I had in mind that this would be good for children. It is not. Maybe for a teenager, but Cliff notes would be better.
