Afghanistan Through the Humvee Window takes readers on a visual journey through areas in Eastern Afghanistan with a former newspaper photographer. The book provides a broad range of vivid and insightful images of people and landscapes from places as remote as they are striking, often taken through the window of a Humvee. The author manages to break through the barriers of the outsider to capture glimpses of genuine Afghan life and society. The images focus on people, markets, government, and children of the Province of Khost, but also include visions of past and present in the capital of Kabul, and some haunting scenery between Khost and Kabul. The author provides fascinating insights without patronizing or advancing policies. Readers of all opinions regarding the war will enjoy this book. Even those with little interest in current events in Afghanistan can simply enjoy photographs that evoke universal human emotions and reveal the stark, rugged beauty of the country. Everyone seems to know at least a few who have served in Afghanistan. The book fills a unique, unmet international demand. It will be of great general interest and also of particular interest to those that have served there. This book allows servicemen to provide friends and family a glimpse into their deployments without delving into more disturbing images that have become the mainstay of media coverage. There is a surprising dearth of photo books about the war, especially in comparison with Iraq, and only one from the vantage point of those who served there, which focuses on military operations. With U.S. troops leaving Iraq by the end of 2011, the Afghanistan War has become the central U.S. foreign policy focus. U.S. troop numbers there surpassed those in Iraq in May 2010. Although the Afghanistan surge will draw down from its 2011 peak of over 100,000 troops and 1,100 civilian-assistance workers and diplomats, it is already the longest conflict in U.S. history and will continue to be the primary destination for U.S. troops until at least 2014. Its massive impact in blood and treasure will be debated into foreseeable future.

When someone says "Afghanistan" you usually think about the bad people but not about the regular people like you and me who are going about their daily business. It changed my view of Afghanistan by showing beautiful landscapes and portraits. I liked that the story was told with personal experiences.

Afghanistan Through the Humvee Window Joe Relk 9780615557380 Books Reviews

The combination of fabulous photography and well-crafted text makes this book both a delight and an education. Photos of Afghanistan people doing everyday activities opened my eyes to an Afghanistan not shown on the evening news.
My father had received this book as a gift. As Afghan natives, the amazing photography and eloquent captions gave us fond reminders of home. By highlighting everyday life the book takes the focus off the war and reveals how people in Afghanistan are not unlike anyone else in the world.
This book has all the photos I wish I could have taken out of the MRAP window, and all the ones I tried to take from helicopters! Afghanistan can seem very bleak, in many different ways sometimes, but this book pulls out its true beauty for the world to see.
Having lived in Afghanistan in the '60's, it was refreshing to view these photos and read the author's impressions of what is happening there now. I appreciated seeing the people themselves in daily life and, certainly, photographing from the Humvee was an original way to document what the author saw. I liked that Mr. Relk wasn't dwelling on the war itself. Putting a human face on a people is a positive step toward understanding.
This book combines outstanding photography with insightful narrative about the Afghan people. Similar books to this one are produced by "visiting" photographers....who drop in for a two week shoot. As a foreign service employee, the author lived and worked with the Afghan people. His photos and text show that deeper understanding. The book would make an outstanding gift for anyone who served in Afghanistan, or for a serviceman or woman to give friends or relatives to illustrate what the country is like. In my case, the book helped me better understand the people whose lives are now so intertwined with ours.
A lovely first-person account on an intimate level of a place few Westerners will see. The photos are terrific, and mainly focus on the bits of trivia that make up daily life - washing a car in a stream, herding cattle, children playing. This small scale helps you to experience it through the author's eyes. The text is thoughtful, and while it contains a lot of facts and statistics, it also has an intimate feel as the author talks about his own background and impressions, along with what it felt like to see what he did - for example, the caption under a photo of a preteen girl at a Mother's Day event says "I like to believe she is thinking about her future and how it may be different from her mother's life."
When someone says "Afghanistan" you usually think about the bad people but not about the regular people like you and me who are going about their daily business. It changed my view of Afghanistan by showing beautiful landscapes and portraits. I liked that the story was told with personal experiences.
