Cassie Baxter, a history professor, has become one of my favorite characters; and the people surrounding her are interesting as well. She, going through her normal work week and interactions, seems to come up with the answers to a mystery that no one else can see, including law enforcement.
In this case, someone is dead from a car accident near the lovely lakeside town in which she and her Si-Fi writer father live. Cassie receives an unusual task which presents problems. With much confusion, a child who has secrets as to what happened comes into her family’s care.
Blackburn’s writes into the core story secondary fun adventures produced by Cassie’s father and next door boyfriend neighbor that enhances the main mystery. They are enjoyable and move the characters and reader to determine who-done-it.
The writing is well thought out and easy-going, flowing along with few bumps in the road. You’ll laugh and like the tone that leads you to an explosive ending. Then all is calm for the Baxters plus two in Lake Elizabeth until a new mystery comes to a calling.

I am so glad that I found these Cassie Baxter Mysteries! I enjoyed the them so immensely that I read them both in one evening. The quirky humor...("Chester the Whooter scooter mechanic"). I was laughing out loud while at the same time enjoying the fun and well designed mystery. Well done Cindy Blackburn.
I absolutely love this second book from Cindy Blackburn!! I loved the first book and have been waiting for another one about Cassie the Vermont Looney Tune!! It would be best if new readers would start with the first book so hat it would set the scene in Vermont. I would recommend these books to anyone who wants a good and funny book.
The word that best describes "Unexpected" by Cindy Blackburn is "delightful." The author takes us into two worlds the "real" life of Vermont resident Cassie Baxter, who is determined to solve a murder, and the fictional world of her father's science fiction novel. The result is a book that will keep you turning the pages to see how things turn out in both worlds. A fantastic sequel to "Unbelievable."
This is such a fun series. Love Cassie, her dad, and all the characters. It's like getting two stories in one since we also get to hear so much about her dad's sci-fi series. The mystery kept me guessing up to the end. Can't wait to read more Cassie adventures.
Cassie Baxter may be a professor, but she's not a kid person. So how could she be given a five-year old boy? A boy that she doesn't know, but has to be Aunt Cassie or Momma Cass as she later finds out. As it turns out Cassie is as much a kid person as she is a super sleuth. Finding a killer, helping her sci-fi writer dad with some plot twists, and trying to have a relationship are all in a day's work for our heroine. I hope there will be more books in this great series.
4.5 Aside from the obvious question of why someone Cassie didn't know listed her as next of kin, who murdered Truman's mother and why remained to be solved. At the same time, Cassie's father has to solve the plot problems of his sci fi story, and even Truman starts talking like the story is real. Cassie may be "looney tunes" but she has a heart of gold when it comes to this little boy.
This is the second in the Cassie Baxter series. Although a shift from Blackburn's Cue Ball mysteries, humor and a steady pace keep the story moving. The characters, including the goats, dog, and Truman's cat Notz, have unique and memorable personalities. And then there's the continuing story of Chance Dooley and his space ship, the Destiny. This is an enjoyable read and can be easily read as a stand alone story.
A totally unexpected pleasure for my Christmas Season reading! Cindy Blackburn's thoroughly amusing and altogether quirky Cassie Baxter is back in her second mystery and along with the usual suspects she has brought an unexpected guest! A must read cozy that will not only have you laughing out loud but will also give a few tugs at your heart strings too!
